Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 cup hot water (or brewed coffee for enhanced flavor)
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans or line with parchment paper.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and sugar.
  3. Add Wet Ingredients: Add the eggs, vegetable oil, milk, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Beat with an electric mixer on medium speed until combined.
  4. Incorporate Hot Water: Gradually add the hot water (or brewed coffee) to the batter while mixing on low speed. The batter will be thin, but that’s normal.
  5. Bake the Cakes: Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  6. Cool the Cakes: Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before frosting.

Notes

  • For a more intense chocolate flavor, substitute the hot water with freshly brewed coffee.
  • Ensure the cakes are fully cooled before frosting to prevent the frosting from melting.
  • Use your favorite frosting, such as chocolate buttercream, cream cheese frosting, or a rich chocolate ganache.
