Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup tomato sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • Optional toppings: pickles, cheese slices, coleslaw

Instructions

  • Cook the ground beef:
In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef, diced onion, and minced garlic for 5-7 minutes until the beef is browned. Drain any excess fat.
  • Make the sauce:
Stir in ketchup, tomato sauce, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, chili powder, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld and the sauce to thicken slightly.
  • Toast the buns:
While the beef simmers, lightly toast the hamburger buns in a separate skillet or toaster for 1-2 minutes until golden.
  • Assemble the Sloppy Joes:
Spoon the sloppy joe mixture onto the toasted buns. Add any desired toppings like pickles, cheese slices, or coleslaw.
  • Serve hot with your favorite sides like fries, chips, or a simple salad.

Notes

  • You can substitute ground turkey or chicken for a lighter version.
  • For extra spice, add a dash of hot sauce or crushed red pepper flakes
