This Grilled Cheese Patty Melts recipe combines juicy beef patties, caramelized onions, and melted cheese between golden, buttery bread. A perfect blend of a grilled cheese and a classic patty melt, this sandwich is ideal for lunch or dinner.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced
  • 8 slices rye bread (or any bread of choice)
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese (or cheddar, provolone)
  • 4 tablespoons butter, softened
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the onions:
Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced onions and cook for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until caramelized and golden brown. Set aside.
  2. Form and cook the patties:
In a bowl, season the ground beef with Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix well and form into 4 equal-sized thin patties.
  3. Cook the patties:
In the same skillet, cook the beef patties over medium heat for about 3-4 minutes per side, until browned and cooked through. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
  4. Assemble the sandwiches:
Butter one side of each bread slice. On the unbuttered side, place a slice of cheese, a beef patty, caramelized onions, and another slice of cheese. Top with another slice of bread, buttered side facing out.
  5. Grill the sandwiches:
Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat. Cook the assembled sandwiches for 3-4 minutes per side, pressing lightly with a spatula, until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted.
  6. Serve hot:
Slice and serve immediately with your favorite sides like fries, pickles, or a salad.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, add sautéed mushrooms or bacon to the sandwich.
  • You can use different cheeses like cheddar or provolone based on your preference.
