These Patty Melts with Secret Sauce are a delicious twist on the classic sandwich, featuring seasoned beef patties, caramelized onions, gooey cheese, and a special tangy sauce that takes it to the next level.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20)
  • 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • 4 slices cheddar cheese
  • 8 slices rye bread
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Secret Sauce Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tbsp pickle relish
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp paprika

Instructions

  • In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tbsp butter and cook onions until golden and caramelized (about 15 minutes). Set aside.
  • Season ground beef with salt and pepper, then form into 4 thin patties. Cook in the same skillet for 3-4 minutes per side until browned.
  • Butter one side of each slice of rye bread. Place a slice of cheddar on the unbuttered side of half the bread slices, top with a beef patty, onions, and a slice of Swiss cheese. Top with the remaining bread slices, buttered side out.
  • In the skillet, cook each sandwich over medium heat until the bread is golden and the cheese melts, about 2-3 minutes per side.
  • Mix the secret sauce ingredients in a small bowl and serve on the side or spread inside the patty melt before serving.

Notes

  • Feel free to swap cheddar and Swiss for your favorite cheeses like American or provolone.
  • For a spicier kick, add some hot sauce to the secret sauce.
