Southern Five Layer Beef Casserole is a deliciously layered dish featuring seasoned ground beef, rice, bell peppers, tomatoes, and melted cheese. This comforting, easy-to-make casserole is ideal for weeknight dinners or potlucks, delivering Southern-style flavors that will satisfy the whole family.

Ingredients

  • Ground beef
  • White or brown rice (cooked)
  • Green bell pepper (sliced)
  • Onion (chopped)
  • Canned diced tomatoes
  • Tomato sauce
  • Cheddar cheese (shredded)
  • Olive oil
  • Garlic powder
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Paprika (optional)

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x13 baking dish.
  • Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add chopped onions and green bell pepper, sauté until softened (about 5 minutes).
  • Add ground beef to the skillet, season with garlic powder, salt, pepper, and paprika. Cook until browned and drain excess fat.
  • Layer the cooked rice on the bottom of the prepared baking dish as the first layer.
  • Spread the cooked ground beef and vegetable mixture evenly over the rice as the second layer.
  • Pour diced tomatoes and tomato sauce evenly over the beef mixture as the third layer.
  • Top with shredded cheddar cheese as the fourth layer.
  • Cover with foil and bake for 30–35 minutes until bubbly. Remove foil for the last 10 minutes to brown the cheese.
  • Let sit for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For added flavor, mix in chili powder or crushed red pepper flakes.
  • Swap ground beef with ground turkey or sausage for a different variation.
  • Serve with a side salad or cornbread for a complete Southern meal
