Ingredients

Scale
  • For the Chocolate Cake:
    • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
    • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
    • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
    • 1 1/2 tsp baking soda
    • 1 tsp salt
    • 2 cups granulated sugar
    • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
    • 2 large eggs
    • 1 cup whole milk
    • 1 cup hot water
    • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • For the Chocolate Ganache:
    • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
    • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • For the Chocolate Buttercream Frosting:
    • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
    • 3 cups powdered sugar
    • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
    • 1/4 cup heavy cream
    • 1 tsp vanilla extract
    • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Cake:
    • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
    • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and sugar.
    • Add the vegetable oil, eggs, milk, and vanilla extract, and beat until combined.
    • Slowly pour in the hot water while mixing on low speed until the batter is smooth (it will be thin).
    • Divide the batter evenly between the two pans and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  2. Make the Chocolate Ganache:
    • Heat the heavy cream in a small saucepan over medium heat until just simmering.
    • Remove from heat and pour over the chocolate chips in a heatproof bowl. Let sit for 1 minute, then stir until smooth and glossy. Let the ganache cool and thicken slightly before using.
  3. Make the Chocolate Buttercream Frosting:
    • In a large bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy.
    • Gradually add the powdered sugar, cocoa powder, and salt, mixing on low speed until combined.
    • Add the heavy cream and vanilla extract, then beat on medium speed until light and fluffy.
  4. Assemble the Cake:
    • Place one cake layer on a serving plate and spread a layer of ganache over the top.
    • Place the second cake layer on top and frost the entire cake with chocolate buttercream frosting.
    • Drizzle any remaining ganache over the top for extra chocolate goodness.
  5. Serve and Enjoy:
    • Slice and enjoy the triple chocolate goodness! Store leftovers in an airtight container.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, substitute the hot water with brewed coffee to enhance the chocolate.
  • Ensure the cakes are fully cooled before frosting to prevent the buttercream from melting.
  • The ganache can also be used between the cake layers for an extra gooey filling.
