Ingredients

Scale
  • For the Meatloaf Layer:
    • 1 1/2 lbs ground beef
    • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
    • 1 egg
    • 1/4 cup ketchup
    • 1/4 cup milk
    • 1 tsp garlic powder
    • 1 tsp onion powder
    • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
    • Salt and pepper to taste
  • For the Mac and Cheese Layer:
    • 2 cups elbow macaroni
    • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
    • 1 1/2 cups milk
    • 2 tbsp butter
    • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
    • 1/2 tsp mustard powder
    • Salt and pepper to taste
    • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs (optional for topping)

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Make the Meatloaf Layer: In a large bowl, mix the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, ketchup, milk, garlic powder, onion powder, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Press the meat mixture into the bottom of a greased 9x13-inch casserole dish, forming an even layer.
  • Bake the Meatloaf: Bake for 20-25 minutes until mostly cooked through.
  • Prepare the Mac and Cheese: While the meatloaf bakes, cook the macaroni according to package instructions and drain.
  • In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes to form a roux. Slowly add the milk, whisking constantly until thickened. Stir in the mustard powder, salt, pepper, and shredded cheese until smooth and creamy.
  • Mix the cooked macaroni with the cheese sauce and spoon it over the baked meatloaf layer.
  • Optional: Sprinkle breadcrumbs over the mac and cheese layer for a crunchy topping.
  • Final Bake: Return the casserole to the oven and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, until the mac and cheese is bubbly and golden on top.
  • Let it rest for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For added flavor, mix barbecue sauce with ketchup for the meatloaf.
  • Use different cheeses such as mozzarella or Colby Jack for variety.
  • This dish can be made ahead and baked before serving.
